As China's economy is still increasing, an other domain has been developing at the same time: the Art business. What was once reserved to a few elite of collectors is now considered an area of choice for investement for newly rich Chinese men. Add to that the focus increases on Chinese artifacts and the question is raised of what motivates this increase of interest as well as the rise of prices : to "buy back their own culture" as would say the managing director of Christies (a very famous auction company)in Hongkong? or /and to be in a "capital war " whoever has the bigger gun is in stronger position"(Mr Ha, collector looking at the newbuyers)?..
Whatever it is, This business generates a lot of money and interest for the old chinese artpieces that had been taken abroad in the previous years.
I am not sure how to react to the article. In a way, I think that, of course, it is important to gain back some antic artifacts , after many of them have been destroyed by the cultural revolution or taken away by foreigners..etc; it shows that it is not because you destroy everything that the past desapears and that in a way it brings back a sort of continuity to China's timeline. But on the other hand, I have a feeling of artificiality, with the art being bought for investement purpose..but then again...that happens all over the world..
