Ai Wewei, the designer of the Bird's Nest, has been missing for 24 hours after being detained in the Beijing airport on his way to Hong Kong. Beyond his artistic skills, he has often been critical of the Chinese government. His detention at the airport was followed by a ransacking of his studio, and he has not been seen since. His assistant, who was with him, was told to fly out without him.
